Notes : Letter from Jean Kohn (Gatewood): "The story about my mother's mother is interesting. She was one of four girls, whose parents died at some point in their youth. The girls were then adopted into different families, and I am pretty sure Johnson is the family who adopted my grandmother. The other three went elsewhere--one to a farm family in southern Illinois, and one to a single woman who took her to California. And I had an Aunt Jenny, who lived in a very poor neighborhood in the north part of Chicago, to whom my mother took money and clothes during the Depression--she had a different last name from my grandmother, even before she was married. |
